If you haven’t already, it is helpful to read the ‘Group Types Overview’ article and the ‘Group Type and Sub-group Type set up’ article.
Creating groups within a Group Type (managing group template)
Once you have defined your Group Types (and Sub-group Types) you can then create your group template. This is a template which will be copied over to each event your organisation runs. You can edit this template and create event-specific groups in the groups area in the main left-hand navigation bar. This allows you to change the setup of the groups between events, if you wish.
In the first example in the diagram, the groups are in green and are called ‘football’, ‘tennis’ and ‘swimming’ and they are the groups within the ‘Sport’ Group Type. The sub-groups are in blue and are called ‘fives’ and ‘sixes’ which are the groups of the Sub-group Type ‘age groups’.
Groups need to be created before sub-groups.
To create groups you click on the ‘manage groups template’ button next to the Group Type you want to create groups for and then the create button. These groups just require a name. This name will be used throughout SignMeUp and possibly on tickets and badges. Create all of the groups you want for your event. For example, if you plan to accept attendees aged 5-8 and you want to group them in groups of a single age you would need to create a group called ‘fives, ‘sixes’, ‘sevens’ and ‘eights’ (or however you wish to label your age groups). Each group should have a unique name.
Creating sub-groups within a Sub-Group Type
Sub-groups can only be created after you have created the Sub-group Types and after you have created your Groups.
To do this, click on the ‘manage groups template’ button next to the Sub-group Type you want to create sub-groups for and then the create button. You will need to give each sub-group a name and then assign it to the correct parent group. This name will be used throughout SignMeUp and possibly on tickets and badges. Whilst you may have multiple sub-groups within each group, you only need to create one here as you can then create the specific number of Sub-groups required for each event at the event level. If the sub-groups will always be the same in number and name from event to event you could create them all here. Sub-groups can have the same name as other sub-groups as they are distinguishable from each other by their parent groups. For example you might have a sub-group called ‘Group A’ in each group as pictured in the diagram above.
For further information about managing the groups and sub-groups within an event please see the article about group management in the Navigation Bar article within the Event Management section.
